Finaaliin valmistautuva Roosters Women kohtaa runkosarjan päätösottelussaan Kotka Eaglesin Velodromilla lauantaina 15.7. Joukkueiden kesäkuinen kohtaaminen päättyi Kotkan Keskuskentällä helsinkiläisten 28-38 vierasvoittoon.
”Viime sunnuntaina koimme karvaan tappion hienosti pelannutta Vaasaa vastaan. Ottelu oli tälle kaudelle tyypilliseen tapaan hyvin tiukka ja lopulta vaakakuppi kääntyi pienten marginaalien turvin ansaitusti vieraille. Hyökkäyksessä otimme rangaistuksia ratkaisevilla hetkillä ja ajoitukset pelien toteuttamisessa olivat hieman pielessä. Nämä asiat ovat onneksi kuitenkin korjattavissa jo ennen seuraavaa ottelua”, summaa hyökkäyksen linjaa Roostersin riveissä valmentava Mika Lyyra. ”En tiedä saako näin sanoa, mutta olen jopa sisäisesti hieman tyytyväinen tappioomme. Sarjataulukon suhteen meille ratkaiseva Jyväskylä voitto aiheutti mielestäni joukkueeseen hieman ”leijumista”, joka näkyi huonona treeniviikkona ja valmistautumisena ottelupäivään. Nyt kun olemme taas maanpinnalla, on tekeminen taas vaaditulla tasolla, ja tulemme olemaan valmiita lauantain haasteeseen.”
Ja haastetta todellakin tulee olemaan. ”Kotkasta on kuulunut huhuja, että he vahvistavat isolla kädellä jo ennestään kovaa rosteriaan liiga-ahmoja hyväksikäyttäen”, Lyyra jatkaa viitaten Eaglesin ja Helsinki Wolverinesin farmisopimukseen. ”Tämä on myös varsin ymmärrettävää, kun ottelu on heille ilmeisen tärkeä monestakin syystä ja farmisopimus tämän mahdollistaa. Myös meidän kannaltamme tämä ennakkoon kova haaste on mielestäni vain hyvä asia. Voittoakin tärkeämpää pelissä on, että saamme mahdollisimman hyvän kenraaliharjoituksen ennen kauden päättävää finaalia. Ja mikä kehittäisi enemmän kuin pelaaminen kovaa vastustajaa vastaan. Sitä en kuitenkaan tarkoita, etteikö tavoitteenamme olisi päättää runkosarja kotikentällä voittoon. Voittaminen kun on aina mukavampaa kuin häviäminen.”
Tiukkaa kamppailua ennustaa myös Roostersin laitahyökkääjänä pelaava Lotta Eräkangas. ” ”Viime viikon ottelu oli meille hyvä muistutus siitä, ettei hyvä alkukausi takaa menestystä kauden lopuissa otteluissa. Uskon kuitenkin, että hyvän treeniviikon jäljiltä lauantaina kentällä tullaan jälleen näkemään se Roosters johon katsojat saivat tottua kauden alkupuoliskolla. Edellinen ottelu Kotkaa vastaan oli tiukka, joten lauantaina on varmasti taas tarjolla vauhtia ja jännittäviä tilanteita.”
Velolla tullaan näkemään tiukka kamppailu viimeisistä sarjapisteitä. Roosters on jo varmistanut paikkansa finaalissa, mutta joukkue lähtee luonnollisesti pelaamaan voitosta. ”Edellämainitut asiat kun laittaa yhteen, niin lauantaina on Velolla luvassa jälleen mielenkiintoinen ottelu. Kotkalaisten joukkueesta seuraisin heidän tähtikaliberin pelaajiaan, sekä ilmeisen vahvistunutta linjapelaamista. Roostersista vedän kirjaimellisesti kotiinpäin ja kehotan seuraamaan vielä aloittelevan, mutta huimasti kehittyneen hyökkäyksen linjapelaajan numero 60 otteita. Hän on jo nyt todistanut, ettei linjassa aina iso koko ole se ratkaiseva tekijä, vaan kovalla asenteella ja isolla punaisella sydämellä pelaaminen voi saada ihmeitä aikaan”, Lyyra summaa.
Eaglesin päävalmentaja, Jarkko Hiitola, on varautunut tiukkaan kamppailuun ja Kotkassa on varauduttu Roostersin hyvään heittopeliin. ”Lauantaina pelaillaan kauden tähän asti tärkein ottelu, jossa panokset ovat kovat. Meidän pitää hyökkäyksessä pystyä liikuttamaan palloa ja pitämään Salmisen johtama hyökkäys sivurajalla. Viime kerralla pitkät heittopelit upposivat liian helposti meidän takakenttään, joten se pitää pystyä pelaamaan pois ja pakottaa Roosters juoksemaan palloa enemmän. Joka tapauksessa luvassa on taas todella tiukka ja fyysinen peli, jonka voittaa se, kumman puolustus saa useamman stopin.”

The regular season for women ends with a match against Eagles
Roosters Women, preparing for the final, will face Kotka Eagles in their final match of the regular season at Velodrom on Saturday, July 15. The teams’ encounter in June ended with a 28-38 away victory for Helsinki at Kotka Keskuskenttä.
”Last Sunday, we experienced a bitter loss against a well-playing Vaasa. The match was, in typical fashion for this season, very tight, and in the end, the scales tipped in favor of the visitors due to small margins. We committed penalties in crucial moments on offense, and the timing of executing plays was a bit off. Fortunately, these things can be corrected before the next match,” summarizes Mika Lyyra, the coach of the offensive line for Roosters. ”I don’t know if it’s appropriate to say this, but I’m even internally somewhat satisfied with our loss. In terms of the league table, the decisive victory against Jyväskylä caused, in my opinion, a bit of ’floating’ within the team, which was evident in a poor training week and preparation for the match day. Now that we’re back on solid ground, our performance is at the required level, and we’ll be ready for the challenge on Saturday.”
And indeed, there will be a challenge. ”There have been rumors from Kotka that they are strengthening their already strong roster significantly by utilizing league players,” Lyyra continues, referring to Eagles’ farm agreement with Helsinki Wolverines. ”This is also quite understandable when the match is apparently important to them for several reasons, and the farm agreement allows for this. From our perspective as well, I believe this preponderantly tough challenge is only a good thing. More than winning, the game is about having the best possible dress rehearsal before the season-ending final. And what better way to develop than playing against tough opponents. However, I don’t mean to say that our goal is not to end the regular season with a victory at home. After all, winning is always more enjoyable than losing.”
A tight battle is also predicted by Lotta Eräkangas, who plays as a wide receiver for Roosters. ”Last week’s match was a good reminder for us that a good start to the season does not guarantee success in the later matches. However, I believe that after a good week of practice, on Saturday, we will see the same Roosters that the spectators got used to in the first half of the season. The previous match against Kotka was tight, so on Saturday, there will surely be speed and exciting situations.”
A fierce competition for the final league points will be seen at Velodrom. Roosters have already secured their spot in the final, but naturally, the team will play for a victory. ”When you put all these things together, it’s clear that Saturday will bring another interesting match at Velodrom. From Kotka’s team, I would follow their star-caliber players and the apparently strengthened offensive line play. As for Roosters, I’m obviously biased and encourage everyone to pay attention to the performance of offensive lineman number 60, who is still a rookie in the OL but has developed tremendously. He has already proven that size is not always the decisive factor in the line, but playing with a strong attitude and a big red heart can work wonders,” summarizes Lyyra.
Jarkko Hiitola, the head coach of Eagles, is prepared for a tough battle, and Kotka has prepared for Roosters’ strong passing game. ”Saturday will be the most important match of the season so far, with high stakes. In offense, we need to be able to move the ball and keep Salminen-led offense on the sidelines. Last time, the long passing plays easily got through to our secondary, so we need to eliminate that and force Roosters to run the ball more. In any case, we can expect another really tight and physical game, and the winner will be the one whose defense gets more stops.”
